Overview

With improved understanding of pathophysiology and disease mechanisms and with technological advancements, the approaches to head and neck surgical disorders and head and neck surgery techniques continue to evolve at a rapid pace. The goal of this course is to provide an update on contemporary head and neck surgery and to foster educational interaction between practitioners from the Pacific Rim and beyond. A distinguished faculty will provide lectures, videos, panels, lightning rounds, and roundtable discussions. Ample time for questions and interaction with faculty is planned. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own cases for discussion.

TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is intended for practicing otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, dermatologic surgeons, advanced health professionals, and nurses.

Objectives

An attendee completing this course should be able to discuss and, as appropriate, apply:

  • An organized and quick step wise approach to locating ingested foreign bodies in children
  • The effects of photodynamic therapy on laryngeal leukoplakia
  • The current optimal approaches for providing pain control and pain management in OHNS surgery
  • The utility of physical examination in diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea
  • The role of the innovative surgeon in adopting new technology and procedures
  • The current state of radiofrequency technology in managing thyroid nodules
  • The pending development of a focused practice designation in thyroid/parathyroid surgery
  • The current perspectives on tailoring the extent of surgery to the pathology when planning parotid tumor surgery
  • A streamlined work-up to evaluate CSF leaks
  • Optimal management strategies for rehabilitating facial paralysis
  • The expanding indications and utility of cochlear implantation

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, University of California, San Francisco Office of Continuing Medical Education is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

UCSF designates this live activity for a maximum of 22.00 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
